hello everyone! i just wanted to upload an example of a scene from the little sky witch. it's a work in progress of the family at dinner. you can see Soleil and her brother Lucien on the right and Ella and Luco (mom and dad) on the left. i'm pretty happy with the composition, although i wish i had made the room look messier and a little more like a magician's house. it's pretty contemporary so i guess i'll live with it. as for what else needs to be done, i need to add just a slight bit of detail the background to keep it from looking too flat as well as making sure it stays receding into the back. the three panels along the upper right are supposed to be a triptych painting so i'll have to add detail to those.

hello everyone! so i've picked up doing the magical girl comic/animation for my thesis class at kendall and a lot of revisions have been done on my end to mostly take the project in a different creative direction. Soleil and her family are now Italian and live somewhere in Sicily. the school is also located in Italy and there looks like there will be some political intrigue with Rome and the Vatican.

in any case, i've bee doing a lot of design work for this project in my class and i've created a logo for it. it's very much the same as the Gunslinger Girl logo so if you're familiar with that series, there's no need to call shenanigans. anyway, here it is! the sub-text is Italian and basically reads "little witch of the sky". i'll be posting more soon!

so it's been a while since i've posted anything on my blog! again! i never got around to making myself a deviant art because at around the time i wanted to start it, school started back up and i've had to devote my time to that instead of making art for myself. but alas! jafax is coming up again and i want to have some new stuff up here so the panel can look at it.

this latest piece i made a little while ago in adobe flash, which i think i've come to get the hang of if i dare say so myself. it's a character based on myself as a Spartan from the Halo universe. enjoy!

hey everybody! so sorry, again, that i missed the image post over the weekend. as i promised i'll be posting an image today just after this thought post. actually that's one of the thoughts for today, i'll be changing some of the labels around and adding news as one. this update is more of a news update anyway.

as an update, i was finally able to meet with foy van dolsen and he told me about his group's (the black hat brigade) video game design stuff. there's currently a pirate game in the works called scurvy but i won't be putting out any other information on it. i was recently asked to do design work for some of the character types for this game and that's what i've been doing for a while.

i'll be posting some of the images here and there as i continue working with foy and black hat brigade. it looks really awesome and they have a lot of promising ideas. i hope i can tell you guys as much as i can about it as it progresses.

PUTTING A PORTFOLIO TOGETHER

hey everyone! end of the work week again. speaking of work, i've got an interview with jimmy johns on monday so hopefully i'll have some money coming in besides my tutoring job at school. in any case, today i wanted to give you guys some tips on putting a portfolio together for art school or maybe for a professional job.

the first thing you need to remember about creating a portfolio is your target audience. remember that you have to please your employer or the person reviewing your portfolio, whoever that may be. if you're trying to get into a fine arts gallery, don't try and show them media art. if you're trying to be employed by a design firm, don't show them fine art. if you're trying to be employed by an illustration company, don't show them sculpture art.

it's a good idea to let people know that you can do other things, but if you aren't playing to their needs, they won't want you.

to get into an art school is similar, but it's okay to show them that you're able to experiment with other things. the idea is to get across that you are really good at doing a few things, and you're able to try other things. spreading yourself out and showing that you're pretty good at every thing but not exemplary at any one thing may bring up the question, "that's nice, but what are you excellent at doing?"

if anything your portfolio should demonstrate that you can do anything that is in your field of work, work with different mediums effectively, and show that you can do a few other things pretty well.

if you're aiming for art school right now, start early. start compiling pieces together right away and make a ton of things so that you have options on what you decide to put in. if you're in high school, you're in luck because you can use the school's supplies. once you get to college, you're all on your own. think smartly!

this is the last image for today. it's another wallpaper design i had in mind. this is the third arc that i conceived for my bleach fanfic. it follows the main characters and a few of the captains and lieutenants from soul society as they battle a new foe, the superior humans. i won't get into it now but this wallpaper is of the main characters. two of the captains have taken roles as teachers while the other characters have taken the roles as students. this one is done in pencil. i wish i had inked it and colored it, i'm quite proud of how it turned out.

another drawing for my bleach fanfic. this is of a captain named rushiko bentoru (bentoru rushiko if you wanna say it in western order). his zanpakuto is called sasori (scorpion) so the text talks about that. he wears a ceramic mask and bandages to hide burn scars that he received a long time ago during a terrible accident. i don't know what that accident is quite yet, but he's pretty scary looking under there. i wanted to base him a little off makoto shishio from the rurouni kenshin samurai x series. this is what i got. again, it's in ink.

i don't have anything scanned in from the magical girl idea so i'll have to show you old art. this is an idea i had for a pc desktop wallpaper themed after the bleach fanfic i wanted to create. he is samanosuke, the second main character of the story and here he is in his visored form with some crazy text in the background. his zanpakuto is called garasu (raven) so his mask is slightly bird like in design. you probably can't even tell.

hey every body. it's tuesday again so i'm here with a new update. i've recently gotten quite involved with beautiful wednesday's manga/comic idea which still has no name. i've done quite a bit of concept art for it, some of which i will share in an art post tomorrow.

this is the blog schedule that i have down tentatively while i have the steam for it. tuesdays and fridays will be thought posts, updating you guys about the week, what i've been working on, thoughts about the art world, etc. wednesdays and saturdays will be art posts for now. i hope i can start updating you guys with more art but until i can get together some really good stuff, this will do.

again, expect to see a deviantart account go up sometime within this next month.

in other news, i've just been invited to join an art venture with a new colleague of mine named foy van dolsen. he's got a group of people who are working on video game design. i don't know what role or how big of a role i'll be playing for them yet, but i will be doing something for them. i'll keep you guys informed about that as it develops as well.

this is lucien. my girlfriend wanted lucien to be a girly-looking, pretty boy (bishi). he's a high schooler, most likely a second year at the beginning of the series. he gets older as it goes on and his hair grows as a signifier. you can see that on one of his portraits, he has a hair clip. it's to hold his hair for him as he works. the kid's a mechanical whiz and his supernatural ability is to bring machines to life. girls dig him. he's the kind of kid who's in his own little world. nice guy, but very expressionless.

hey everyone. i missed the saturday image post so i apologize but to make up for it, i have four images to show you today. my girlfriend (beautiful wednesday) has been reading a lot of shoujo manga and decided that she wants to create a magical girl manga. so this past weekend or so, i've been drawing furiously to come up with something suitable.

she's doing most of the writing, though i get to interject some of my ideas into it, and i've been tasked with character design. she wants to also draw and compare our two styles to see how they look next to each other.

this is the premise we have so far:

the magical girl is named soleil. she is an elementary school aged student who has been born into a family of supernaturally gifted people. her mother is a witch who has settled on a life of menial household chores, her father is an alchemist who uses his abilities to run a bakery out of their home, and her brother is high school aged and has the ability to bring life to machinery.

we know so far that she attends a normal school, lakeview academy, during the regular school year. in the summer, she attends the academia e magnum opus, school for the supernaturally gifted. so far we think that she's going to be big on potions. her specialty is creating perfumes that stimulate different emotions based on her own feelings as she's brewing them.

there's no real antagonist or plot yet. but that's the premise we have so far. anyway, i'll be posting those characters today.

i've discovered that if i set realistic standards for myself, i'll acheive them without fail. so starting after tomorrow, expect at least two art pieces from me per week. i feel like it's so boring when i just put out my thoughts when i have realitively no artistic work up on my blog.

once i get enough pieces done, i think i will also start a deviantart account. it seems to be the thing to do for people who are going into art. expect to see me on deviantart within the next month or so.

oh and as an added food for thought. if you set goals like this for yourself, there's a good chance that you'll make them happen. you should know and understand your own abilities and limitations so well that you know what a realistic goal is. that is all.

THE WORKING ARTIST

hey everybody. today's post is a little about working professionally as an artist. as many of you may have suspected, it's quite difficult to make a living as a working artist. why? let's talk about going professional for a second.

first we have art school. after graduating high school and going off to a university or college, the artist should pick some sort of art program to start with. after graduating from art school, you have to actually get a job.

most art jobs are freelance--there's no way around this. the typical painter, illustrator, fine artist, whatever, generally has to wait for someone to call him or her up or contact via email and ask for something to be made. that's how most artists make their money. occasionally a painter or illustrator will create a series of works that aren't meant for anyone else but him or herself. this is what we all want to do as artists.

to make money this way, those pieces have to be put into a gallery, which means contacting a gallery owner and begging to be put on a waiting list that may be three years long. after that, the series of pieces are reviewed before being put up and then when they are put up, you pay a gallery fee and hope someone buys your pieces, in which time the artist only receives a small percentage (i've heard of people only getting 10-20%) of the actual purchase price.

if you decide instead to be a designer, or concept artist, or whatever for a major firm doing commercial work (not just advertising, but work that makes money on a buyer's market) you'll be lucky enough to be employed in house on a salary, receiving bonuses for major jobs. jobs like this are hard to come by but they're things ranging from greeting card design at hallmark, animating or doing concept work for nickelodeon or disney, working as a layout designer for a major magazine, or other things of that nature.

jobs like that will take you to either new york, california, or florida. there aren't very many local markets around michigan that's for sure.

so how do we make money?

if you're working freelance, do other things on the side. work a factory job, fast food, supermarket, whatever you can to get by during the day and then do your artwork at night to unwind. it's not the lifestyle that you envisioned for yourself, but it'll keep you afloat and hopefully out of debt.

for instance, i run an online store for amway which is in my links. if i direct people to my website and tell them about what i do, i can maybe direct them to amway as well to purchase something that's not art related. it's cheap and it's not steady, but it'll do.

if you're working in house at a design agency, then you're lucky enough to be paid a wage. most people who do this are generally unionized and so have rights and benefits beyond the average salary worker.

there's the life of an artist for you. if you're also lucky enough to be an artistic genius which arrives every 100 years or so, you may be able to die rich from just one piece of work that you do.

WHAT I'M WORKING ON 1

hey everybody. it's still the beginning of the week but i hope everyone's is going well. today i want to kind of share my creative process and give everyone a look at what i'm currently working on.

when i was in middle school, i was introduced to an awesome program called rpg maker 2000. the program utilizes super nintendo 16-bit graphics and simplistic variable programming to make games. it was bootlegged of course but i had been given a chance to do something i'd always wanted to do: make my own games. mine were crude and used a lot of the default graphics they provided. because i didn't have a very thorough understanding of variables, switches, forked conditions, etc., i never really got anywhere with it.

years later i would be introduced to rpgmaker.net where other amateur rpg makers were coming together and showing off their stuff. i can honestly say that i've seen a lot of crap come out of it, but also a lot of what i would call professional old school games. i was inspired again in high school to pick up where i'd left off. i began to understand the mechanics of the program a little more and started coming up with tons of game ideas.

this is the idea i've been running with since the end of my high school days.

The largest empire in the world is the Empire of Altea. Its union of the twin nations of Landis and Vielés under the mother nation of Altea makes it the greatest empire to have ever been founded on the continent of Van'delise. The empire uses claims of divine right to conquer smaller territories and nations in hopes of expanding to the reaches of Van'delise's four corners.

As the Imperial Altean Army approaches the Kingdom of Livaria, King Allistar Salem Ganus XVII flees, leaving his people to be conquered and his monarchy to be overturned. In shame, he takes shelter in the neighboring neutral Kingdom of Iselia, ruled by the virtuous Queen Garnet Iselia IX. But the wise queen sees the impending threat of the invasion of her own nation.

The Queen orders her greatest female Knight to accompany the fallen King Allistar in hopes of building an army large enough to resist the Imperial Army of Altea. Together they will encounter many men and women with various political and religious views who will aid their cause. Join them in their plight and become the master of the greatest legion this world has ever seen.

i got the idea when i played suikoden ii for the first time. i'd always loved the final fantasy series but when i played suikoden ii, i was introduced to a whole new style of rpg. in suikoden you play as a young character who must recruit 108 other characters to join his cause. i spent countless hours playing through and trying to find all 108, fighting bosses and monsters along the way and becoming entangled in political intrigue.

after i beat the game i decided i wanted to do something like that. i couldn't abandon my love of final fantasy, of course, so i came up with a combination of the two.

so that's what i've been working on for a while. all of my concept art has been going toward that and i've been trying to recruit a team who can work with rpg maker 2000 to help me with it. if you're interested or know someone who might be, contact me via email or comment.

i designed this image for the final fantasy fan game i'm trying to develop for rpg maker 2003. the moogle is designed to reflect its name.

in the japanese version, the word for moogle is moguri, which is a play on words of the japanese words for mole and bat. in essence a moogle is a mole-bat. i made him look more like a mole but gave him hamster hands and feet.

the chocobo chick is pretty self explanatory. it looks like a baby chicken.

WHY I DECIDED ON ART

hey guys. there aren't many of you watching this blog yet but hopefully as my art proliferates, so will my fans. as i promised in my previous post, today i'm going to share some thoughts about when i began to realize that i wanted to pursue art seriously. hopefully the people reading this post who are interested in art but don't know what it takes to be an artist will understand what it's like.

i am the typical artist's story. i was very young when i started drawing, i'd say about three years old. when i first started drawing, i skipped stick figures immediately. the reason was that i could see the kids on television doing the typical stick figure thing and i would think to myself, "that's not how people look. we aren't skinny and have circles for head."

when i began school i drew all the time--even during play time. i usually became bored easily with the blocks and trains and such that they had lying around. all throughout elementary and middle school, i cultivated my technique by copying the people whose work i admired. i usually copied characters from cartoons, video games, television shows, and all sorts of that kind of stuff. little by little, i took what i liked from each artist's style and crammed it into my own technique.

by high school i had developed a style that i was pretty mastered in. at this time, though, i began to see that my art couldn't compare to the likes of the professionals just yet. i didn't have the formal training that set me apart. what i've been taught by various masters is that "in order to break the rules, you have to learn them first." this means that you can't produce crap and try to justify it by saying it's your style. i've seen first hand in art school that plenty of people who truly can't draw are moving about and using the word "style" to hide behind.

in any case, if you should take anything away from my personal experience as an artist, it should be that being an artist is a lot of hard work. if you truly feel like art is your calling here is what i would advise:

1. draw every single day. this keeps you warmed up and wires your brain to deal with the constant movement of your hand.

2. draw all sorts of things, not just things that you are comfortable with. this allows you to be more versatile. as an added bonus, things you learn while drawing unfamiliar objects can also be applied to things that are more familiar to you.

3. learn the rules. draw from life and learn proper proportion, the differences in the value of light, gain an understanding of form, and learn how to distinguish foregrounds from backgrounds.

4. work with all kinds of materials. even if you don't feel comfortable with them, you might learn to like a different medium and become really good at it. blending different media always produces strong work.

5. be persistent. if you can't work out a certain angle or view, just keep trying. eventually you will get it, and if you keep getting it you will do it right every single time from then forward.

6. develop your own style. this is the last thing you should be concerned with until you decide to become a professional in the field but learn to draw in your own way. it will set you apart, and it's always much easier to do things your own way rather than someone else's.

the following four commissions were made by a group cosplaying as characters from super smash bros. brawl. they all presumably had characters they had created in the past so they were able to make rough sketches of their characters at the booth with notes left for me so that i could redraw them in my own style.

a classic naruto rivalry

this commission was made by a talented artist in her own right. she presented me with two drawings, one of a character she had designed herself for the naruto universe and a character sketch made by her friend. her intention was to have me draw the two interacting in a way that reflects their relationship--a friendly rivalry.

i drew the two of them standing apart, initially with the skull bubble in the middle of them. the client returned a little later and asked me to add the

background, leaving it completely up to me. the sandwich was my touch, something that the girls are fighting over. and the background is a window overlooking a roughly drawn konoha.

jet and ein

this commission was also of an existing character. the client had a hard to deciding what he wanted me to draw for him so he left to think about it for a bit. when he came back, he commissioned a front and back view of jet from cowboy bebop with ein, the dog, in ink.

needless to say, it was a fun commission. my cousin, who was helping me at the booth, loves dogs and thought that i did a really good job with ein, so i guess i'll give myself a pat on the back for that one.

these next two here were commissioned by someone who works in the drama department at gvsu doing costume design. she's a really talented designer and you can find her stuff at tanalilt.deviantart.com.

the two things she had asked me to draw for her were so different that i was actually somewhat bamboozled. the first drawing here is a girl in a super tight space suit with sleek designs and curves.

the second commission tanalilt asked me to do for her was much baggier with many more layers and less curves. he was very tribal looking, and with the blue color scheme she was using, he seemed almost like someone from a more arctic tribe or something of that nature.

this one was fun to draw. i was able to do both views in about fifteen minutes or so because i had roughed the shapes out so well.

this commission was randomly placed. the customer had only a few dollars but wanted some art. the emphasis was that it should be a quick drawing so i whipped out this guy. i even forgot to finish the left foot on the chocobo chick.

these two were also featured in the piece that i submitted to the jafax committee for payment on my table for artist alley. i've grown to be somewhat fond of them and i hope i'll be able to make more art featuring these little guys in the future.

fourteenth captain

this commission was made by one of the buddies i made at jafax 2010. he asked me to draw him as a captain from the popular manga/anime bleach. he came up with the idea of being the captain of a newly formed fourteenth company.

he emphasized a hardcore traditional look. the captain's cloak was left with the sleeves on and the sword is worn in his sash. i gave him rosary beads as a sort of homage to jin from samurai champloo.

this commission was made by a client in costume. she actually asked me to draw an existing character for her. this is rex from the cartoon network show generator rex.

when i was trying to draw this guy my internet actually dropped out of the gvsu network so i was using my little cousins' phones to connect to the internet and search for the image.

it was interesting to draw an existing character in my own style. it's cool to see what you'll come up with when you try to do something like this.

noir detective

this was one of the curve ball commissions i received at jafax 2010. the client asked me to draw him as a 1920s film noir detective. of course i know what film noir looks like but i had never really been asked to do something like this before. over all i was pretty pleased with how it came out. i bet if i practiced a little

more, i could come up with a more refined style of drawing for noir characters.

there is a cigarette in his right hand and the gun in his shoulder holster is actually a revolver. if i could redo anything about this drawing, the first thing i would pick would probably be that gun. i feel like i made it way too small. oh well, you win some you lose some.

cleric and warrior

the two girls that commissioned this piece already had their own characters from a role playing game of theirs. one of their characters is a cleric and the other is a warrior/tank.

they wanted me to draw the two characters interacting in an environment together, with the cleric healing the warrior. i thought about it and figured a battlefield would be the best choice. it was a lot more work than i thought but it came out pretty cool.

if i could do this one over, though, i might have put a horde of ogres or something in the background. that would have been a lot easier than the entire battlefield.

hey everybody. to everyone who picked up my business card at jafax 2010 and are visiting my blog for the first time i just want to say thanks and welcome. i'd also like to thank everyone who gave me business at jafax's artist alley this year, you were all terrific. the contracts haven't been scanned in yet so to those of you still waiting on an email from me i'll get your contract to you within the week.

moving on. as you all might have noticed, i don't update this blog regularly. i actually had quite a few things up but took them down to change my image a while ago. my girlfriend tried to manage my blog for me for a while but that didn't go too well. now that i've gotten my name out a little more i'm going to try to update regularly. expect a new drawing at least once a week and a new post about my art, art school, and the professional world at least every two days or so.

a satire on public service announcements that parodies hans holbein's portrait of henry viii. the face i used is that of an obese child and not the face of king henry viii himself.

a quasi-pointillist approach at a self portrait i painted in color theory. i say quasi because the technique i settled on uses actual local color rather than using shades of primary colors to give the illusion of another color through optical blending.

ode to memento mori

master copy in prisma

this is a master copy i did in drawing ii of vanitas by phillipe de champaigne. it is in the genre of memento mori meaning 'be mindful of death' a genre of art with the purpose of reminding people of their mortality. i copied the image backwards, however, and so it is actually a reflection of the original work.

here are the logos for digital koifish. the color scheme is black and white so i tried to do both black on white and white on black. i like the black on white more because it's a little more simplistic, but the white on black really just pops.

this is the .jpg version of a logo i did for a client. the final delivery was a .pdf file. they raise arabian horses which have a very distinctly deep dish where the eyes meet the muzzle and a very heavy cheek line.
